Tejo is named after the famous Tejo River. Tejo is the longest waterway of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises in the Sierra de Albarracín of eastern Spain, and flows westward across Spain and Portugal to empty into the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon.
It is traditional for Lisbon's poets to refer to the entwining Tejo as the city's lover. The river is indeed an ever-present part of the city's decor, and the official entrance to Lisbon is a broad marble stair mounting from the water to the vast, arcaded Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio). The three landward sides of the square are surrounded uniform 18th-century buildings.
